416 Dentistry
Jason Adinata of 416 Dentistry has ambitious goals to challenge the traditional norms of the dental clinic and redefine it in the city.
His goal is to create a vibrant atmosphere for patients that showcases the innovations within the field. Architectural Challenges
The construction phase of interior design projects can bring both many challenges often resulting in stress or great satisfaction. Some only become apparent when work begins.
Existing Architectual Conditions
The existing long and narrow space posed some challenges when it came to window locations and configuring the layout. Two of four walls were floor to ceiling glazing which created some challenges when it came to balancing privacy and connection to the street.
To solve this, we organized all of the operatories closer to the street while placing more private functions, such as a staff room, at the back. Additionally, narrow and long space allowed for little to no flexibility when it comes to laying out a clinic. To allow for more welcoming and transparent space we created a central corridor connecting private and public areas, while also using height of the space to our advantage by creating light features that guided people though the corridor.
As a result, We were able to craft a beautiful design while maintaining efficient layout and most optimal exposure to the streetscape drawing patients into the space.
Budget
While working with a limited budget we tried to meet client’s needs and provide a comprehensive design. Given such limitations we aimed to cut down costs at back of house areas while investing in patient areas, such as reception, interior design features and glass enclosures that supported transparency.
To address this, we created a layout that showcased operatories and lab and used glass enclosures with metal trims to create a unique look that tied with client’s branding. At the same time, the reception area used wooden slat wall as a feature seem from the street, while the reception desk paid homage to signature colours and draw inspiration from the silhouette of Scarborough Bluffs.
As a result, we were able to meet budget constraints and create the dental practice design that both we and the 416 Dentistry are proud to showcase.
Our Approach
To achieve the best results we listen carefully to client requests. In the case of 416 Dentistry, the design guidelines provided by the owner were specific and had great design ambitions and attention to detail.
In order to adapt to the existing conditions of the space and meet our client’s expectations we had to get very creative. The aim was to create a welcoming and memorable space where community can gather, while also having transparency between public and private allowing the dentist to showcase his state of the art technology and equipment.
To create this we exposed sterilization and lab stations for passers by, while locating the dental operatories facing the street and creating a large reception area with a central corridor to all supporting spaces to further the idea of transparency.
Dental Practice Design
The concept was inspired by our client’s desire to promote transparency of his practice through the design. Traditionally dental clinics appear closed off and private. By creating open and transparent space, we helped our client evoke a feeling of honesty and integrity. The transparency created would allow the clinic to connect to passing patients and the community.
Additionally, using angles and black accents created coherence between the interior and branding. We used black and white palette with warm wood elements.
As a result, 416 Dentistry received a space that had strong ties with its branding and created a welcoming space for the community that promoted design excellence and values of the practice.
Architectural Drawings
In order to meet clients wishes, while also creating efficient and profitable dental practice, we created the layout that showcases patient-focused spaces: waiting area, dental operatories, consultation room. We also made certain to showcase the state-of-the-art technologies and equipment the practice has to offer: sterilization and laboratory. These displays were made to face the street so that pedestrians would be drawn into the space. The see-through layout also promotes and showcases the clinic to the public.
Angular wooden beams were used in the corridor as a design feature to promote design excellence within the space. Furthermore, the angled design of the reception desk drew inspiration from the silhouette of Scarbrough bluffs, which furthered the visual connection to local community and payed homage to an area important to the client.
Build
The custom reception drew inspiration from Scarbrough bluffs - an area significant to the client. The angular design incorporates stone and light wood, creating a contrast that’s elevated by lighting. Overall the design incorporates wood, glass, concrete tiles and black metal accents, which crafts coherence between clinic’s branding and the space.
While in the construction phase we guided clients through the process and established good communication between client, contractors, and ourselves (the architect). For any challenge that arose we proposed a timely and cost-effective solution which met the client’s design standards. For example, while working with a feature wall in one of the dental operatories, we faced a challenge of constructing the detail in a feasible manner. To resolve this issue we redrew the details and consulted the contractor to create the most effective solution for all parties.
As a result, we created a space that has a coherent connection between the space and branding, and meets both our own, and our client’s design standards.
The Final Result: An Innovative Dental Practice Design
Upon its completion, the clinic has four dental operatories, two treatment rooms, supporting facilities, and a welcoming and innovative practice design with a calming atmosphere. This space encompassed all the elements and features the client desired, maintaining both its aesthetic appeal and practical functionality.
