A Modern
Pediatric Dental Office Design

Kids Dental Studio by Tasios

The project scope was to renovate an existing orthodontics clinic into a pediatric dental clinic, retaining a few rooms—including the washroom, staff room, and pan room—while demolishing and reimagining the remaining space from a clean slate.

The concept was to create a fun, elevated dental clinic for kids with a nature theme that inspires calm and stimulates curiosity. In the waiting area, a 10-foot-high tree surrounded by bubble lamps and reflective leaves not only captivates young patients, but also helps ease any pre-appointment anxiety.

A winding waiting bench connects various video game stations, offering interactive play while keeping the space cohesive, and the enhanced acoustics from felt walls combined with whimsical lighting create a soothing environment that benefits both children and their caregivers.

Architectural Challenges

For many interior design projects, the construction phase can bring both great satisfaction and incredible stress. Some challenges become apparent only once the work begins.

Design for both kids and adults

One of the key challenges was striking the right balance between a fun, playful environment that captivates children and a sophisticated space that adults and staff can appreciate. Designing for dual audiences required thoughtful consideration of aesthetics, functionality, and overall ambiance.

The goal was to integrate engaging, whimsical elements—such as playful lighting and interactive features—while avoiding visual clutter that might overwhelm adults or detract from the professional setting. Additionally, careful planning was needed to create zones that allow for both energetic play and quiet moments, ensuring that the space remains functional for dental procedures and comfortable for caregivers.

This balancing act was essential to deliver a clinic that is not only delightful for young patients but also efficient and appealing for adults and staff.

existing conditions

Along with making the space fun and enjoyable, the aim is to maximize the number of operatory and hygiene rooms and ensure that there was sufficient space in the reception and waiting areas. We needed to ensure that there was a surgical room, recovery room, 2 operatories, and 2 hygiene rooms.

A couple of the retained rooms had an angular layout and we worked with them to save on cost.  While we want to ensure that all designs are maximized to our best ability, cost plays a big factor in determining what is achievable. By maintaining some of the existing rooms, it meant that plumbing locations can be retained along with millwork, doors, and some light fixtures.

Secondary Exit

Creating a secondary exit so that those in the waiting room are not impacted by kids finishing their appointments. Kids can oftentimes finish their appointments unhappy and staff want to ensure that kids with their upcoming appointments are not affected.

By creating and having a second exit, parents and their children can leave the space quickly and efficiently without disturbing the peaceful and fun environment of the waiting area.

Our Approach

Our mandate was to create a kids clinic that is for kids and adults. It should be fun for kids while their parents and guardians should also enjoy the space without being overwhelmed with visual stimulation of screens and bright colours.

With a nature themed space, we imagined a 10 feet high tree with multi-coloured and reflective leaves on the wall, and a snaking bench.

We designed a prize and spin wheel station where kids can have a goal for the end of their appointments. There is also an ice cream station at the reception where kids can grab a frozen treat before they leave.

Sound plays an important part in designing for children. We created a felt wall with multi-coloured felt daisies behind the receptionists to help with absorbing the sounds coming from the treatment rooms and waiting areas.

The Final Result: A Modern Pediatric Dental Clinic Designed for Both Kids and Adults

The 1,800 square foot clinic was designed to ensure a positive and efficient experience for everyone who visits. Every detail in the space is thoughtfully curated to create an environment that not only minimizes anxiety but also encourages engagement. The layout optimizes patient flow, ensuring that families can move through the clinic seamlessly while enjoying the inviting atmosphere.

The area is enlivened with interactive games, enticing prizes, a variety of toys, and playful imagery that all contribute to a calming yet stimulating ambiance. These elements are strategically placed to entertain young patients, reducing stress during their visit, while still maintaining a professional and comforting setting for adults and staff. Overall, the design marries functionality with a cheerful aesthetic, creating a memorable experience that balances both care and fun.
